Lecture: Rethinking Building Performance Under Climate Stress

In his lecture titled High-Performance and Climate-Resilient Buildings and Cities, Prof. Attia challenged us to rethink how we measure building performance, shifting beyond static annual metrics toward hourly resilience frameworks that reflect real-world stresses including heat waves, grid outages, and urban heat island effects. His proposed key transitions — covering passive survivability, the shift from annual to hourly metrics, emission-free urban cooling, building retrofitting, and scaling resilience to district-level energy systems — offered a compelling, evidence-based roadmap for the future of sustainable design.

We are deeply grateful to Prof. Shady Attia for sharing research insights spanning Belgium, Europe, Africa, and China. Conversations like these remind us why interdisciplinary dialogue matters in building the resilient cities of tomorrow.
